A man was shot dead at the residence of a Samajwadi Party leader in Lucknow during the wee hours of Saturday, police said. The deceased has been identified as Rakesh Rawat who was attending a birthday party at SP leader Amit Yadav’s flat in Hazratganj’s La Place colony.
According to the police, there were four other people present in the flat at the time of incident– Vinay Yadav, Gyanendra, Aftab and Pankaj Singh.
“It was Vinay’s birthday for which the party was organised. Pankaj Singh has been living in this flat for the past five years. The men had gathered in the flat at around 8 pm on Friday. Aftab had brought liquor as well,” said police.
Officials further said that they received information about the murder at 1.51 am on Saturday. “We received information that Rakesh was pointing the gun at others but shot himself. He said that the gun belonged to Rakesh. The caller further said that the incident is from two-three hours ago and that the victim is admitted at Trauma Centre,” said police.
However, it was later revealed that the gun belonged to Pankaj and under the influence of alcohol, he brought the gun out to show it to his friends. As Rakesh was having a look at it, Vinay tried to take it from him. Amidst the back and forth, the gun went off and a bullet hit Rakesh.
“The four others took Rakesh to the hospital where he was declared dead. The four decided to mislead the police and made false statements. They are under police custody and are being questioned as the case is under investigation. The deceased’s family has been informed of his demise,” said a statement by the Lucknow Police.
